BOYS TRACK TEAM REPEATS AS STATE CHAMPS

The La Salle Boys Indoor Track and Field team won the 2015 RIIL State Championship in convincing fashion Saturday at the PCTA. Coach Vin McGinn's squad won the first event and never looked back after that. They scored 104 points to easily outdistance second place Barrington High School's 58 points. Jack Salisbury and DJ Principe were individual winners, and Matt Bouthilette showed why this is a team championship with his outstanding day.

The Rams started their day with a win in the 4 x 800m relay. Salisbury, Dan Paiva, James Placco, and Chris Shakespeare ran the legs on the relay. Shakespeare, running with the three All-Staters, probably ran the most important leg to help take the pressure off his teammates. He ran his fastest time ever to make the other three runners' long day get off to an easier start.

The 4 x 200m relay ran a school record time on their way to second place. Brody Santilli, Vito Matarese, Jesse Woodbury, and Cameron Morenzi ran a 1:32.82

In the 3000 meter run, Principe, Bouthilette, and Jake Grundy ran a great race. The goal was to finish 1-2-3 and they did. Principe got credit for the win by one hundreth of a second as he and Bouthilette crossed the line together. Bouthilette was the 3000 merter champ in 2014, and Principe is the 2014 Cross Country champion. Grundy finished right behind them to give the Rams 24 points in the 3000.

In the 1500 meters, Salisbury, Bouthilette, Paiva, and Principe finished 1-2-3-5 to give the Rams 26 more points. Salisbury edged Bouthilette by a hundreth of a second as they too also crossed the line together. Bouthilette missed being a double winner by two hundreths of a second combined, but if he was disappointed, it certainly didn't show. He had a job to do, and he did it to perfection.

On the straightaway, Santilli and Sam Coleman picked up more points in the 55m dash as they finished third and fifth, respectively.

In the 600 meter race, Placco ran a PR and finished second with a time of 1:24.8. Morenzi and Cam Rotsart finished fourth and sixth, respectivley in the 300 meters.

Salisbury took home his second gold medal with a win in the 1000 meters. Paiva and Bouthilette finished their busy days with fourth and sixth place finishes.

The championship for the boys was their second conecutive title after a 43 year drought. By winning the cross country and indoor titles, the boys are two/thirds of the way to a sweep.
